Born on March 12, 1948, in Socorro, New Mexico, Eddie was the cherished son of Frank and Lupe Bernal and grew up alongside his siblings Nestor, Delano, Delphi, and Vangie. From an early age, Eddie was known for his warmth, resilience, and generous spirit, qualities that would define him throughout his life. In 1964, Eddie's life took a transformative turn when he spotted Yvonne Fajardo across a crowded study hall. For Eddie, it was love at first sight, and he pursued her with a quiet yet determined charm that eventually won her heart. The two became inseparable, sharing their dreams, challenges, and lives together from the day they wed on July 29, 1968, surrounded by family and dear friends.
Eddie's journey led him to Highlands University, where he earned his degree in Electrical Engineering, a field in which he would distinguish himself over the next 35 years. His career took him and Yvonne to Las Vegas, Nevada, where Eddie began his work as an engineer, specializing in research that earned him respect as an innovative mind and a patient mentor. Together with Yvonne, Eddie created a beautiful life, welcoming three daughters, Melissa, Marlena, and Melanie, each of whom he adored and devoted himself to with boundless pride. As a father, he was deeply involved, a constant figure at games and practices, a coach, and an unfailing supporter. He built not only a career but a legacy of love, knowledge, and commitment that would shape his daughters' lives and inspire generations to come.
In 1993, Eddie gained the title he cherished most: Gramps. He became a grandfather to eight grandchildren and later a great-grandfather to three, each of whom held a unique place in his heart. He was Gramps to them all, yet he had a way of connecting individually with each child, sharing in their joys, offering his wisdom, and filling their lives with laughter and love. Eddie’s home, a place of comfort and joy, became a cherished sanctuary, where family would gather for every holiday, and he loved nothing more than hosting them all, filling his home with the sounds of laughter and love that he cherished so deeply. Often, he would drift to sleep on the living room couch, contentedly listening to the joy and laughter of his family surrounding him.
Eddie’s life was one marked by joy and curiosity. He had a passion for the outdoors, whether he was casting a line, navigating a camping trip, or boating with his loved ones. He found joy in teaching his family these pastimes, making sure each member knew how to fish, camp, golf, or bowl. He loved working with his hands, particularly in woodworking, and he often crafted pieces that family members would treasure for years to come.
Eddie’s life was woven into the lives of all those he loved, and his legacy is one of quiet strength, steady devotion, and unconditional love. He served as a mentor, friend, and counselor to his family, always putting their needs before his own, sacrificing and supporting in ways that will continue to shape the lives of those he leaves behind. Though he held many titles in his life, the ones he treasured most were those of husband, father, Gramps, and uncle. In his final days, Eddie remained a pillar of strength and love, and his spirit will forever echo in the hearts of his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Yvonne; his children Melissa, Marlena, Melanie, Delali, and William; his grandchildren Richard, Rachael, Rebecca, Brandon, Brittany, Brieanna, Brooke, Samuel, Hannah, Daniel, Jeslyn, Shawn, and Ignacio; his great-grandchildren Mesa, Xavi, and Ozzy; and his sisters Delphi and Vangie. Eddie’s legacy of love and faith endures, a testament to a life lived in service to family, friends, and community. He is deeply missed but forever cherished in the memories and hearts of all who were blessed to know him.

"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together...there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is even if we are apart...I'll always be with you," - Winnie The Pooh
I am so glad to have had the opportunity to visit with him, to express my gratitude and to tell him what he meant to me - not as my biological dad, but my dad of the heart. And most of all, to say to him that I loved him.
I am blessed and honored to be one of his girls.
My Gramps was not a perfect man. He occasionally made tortillas that were too salty, he had multiple unfinished projects, some how his golf ball was never in the rough, and I'm pretty sure I heard him say "shit" once or twice. He wasn't perfect, but dammit he was close.
"But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.
I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.
I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me."
Proverbs 1:5
"Let the wise hear and
increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,"
